Erotic Adventures Of Candy Cast: Carol Connors, John Holmes, Georgina Spelvin, Turk Lyon, John Leslie, Eileen Wells, Chris Cassidy, Lauren Black, Gail Palmer, Paul Thomas.
Based (loosely :)) on Voltaire's political pastiche Candide, Carol Connors
plays Candy Christian, a bubbly twenty-year-old virgin, with a heart of
gold, a head full of air, and the desire to cheerfully pursue whatever lies
ahead. Once she loses her cherry to Mexican gardener Don Fernando, it's off
to the races for a cross-country sexual odyssey. Her naiveté is grounds for
jogger John Holmes to show her "his deformity". Gynaecologist John Leslie
and medical researcher Turk Lyon also take full advantage of poor Candy.
Finally she winds up with the Balde Kishkas (PT hamming it up outrageously),
a love cult that practices sex all day long. The charm of this film is that
it combines comedy with sex and largely succeeds. But, and there is a but;
Connors plays the passive airhead so well, (sounding like "Willow" from
"American Pie" she's actually a lot better at the role than the queen of
dumb, Bambi Woods) that a lot of the scenes feature her just lying there
while some guy (Holmes, Leslie, PT) humps her...not very erotic IMHO. The
only scene that stands out is the first; her dream sequence with the
Gardner, Don Fernando. This is a great scene and as she dreams of a romantic
Spanish love affair (complete with Penthouse-style Vaseline on the camera)
she grabs her teddy and puts him between her legs. Carol really looks horny
in the scene, too, with her nipples all puffy. I cannot stress enough how
good the acting is all round: Carol plays the title role with remarkable
innocence, her character is easy to like and to sympathize with, the
ensemble cast includes Georgina Spelvin (always a great actress) as Candy's
all-knowing Aunt Kraven. The Verdict: as a sex comedy, it is up there with
the best. As porn however, it falls someway short, 2.95 on the Imperator
Scale. <Some Notes from Luke Ford:> Carol Connors, star of Gail Palmer's Erotic Adventures of Candy and its sequel Candy Goes to Hollywood, had her first big role as Harry Reems's playful nurse in Deep Throat. Carol was a shrewd businesswoman who excelled in playing dumb blondes. She always appeared innocent. In the mid '70s she appeared on television's Gong Show. Gail Palmer plays Carol's schoolmate at the beginning of the pic. According to the rumours, Bob Chinn shot many of the films credited to Gail Palmer. Despite all the industry hype, Gail was little more than a pretty face who happened to be the mistress of powerful mob pornographer Harry Mohney. She showed up on the set of movies credited to her, but her input was minimal. Harry threatened to break the legs of porn journalists who considered revealing the truth about Gail. Palmer was bad luck to those who hung around her. Nasty things such as broken legs and worse happened to those who displeased her. Journalist Hunter S. Thompsen and pornographer Peter Wolfe number among her victims.
