I guess I have a weakness for lists (probably why I loved reading High Fedelity), so here's a question to ask that I haven't seen brought up yet: what porn movie has the best music in it? I must confess that I've seen a small fraction of the porn that many here have, so I'm curious as to what people say. I can't think of one porno that I've seen that had decebt music in it - it's usually horrible. I'd probably have to say Tabboo 2 then, simply for the comedic value of the score.

I would say I loved the colelction of songs in the following movies:

1- Little me and marla straneglove (classic 70's style original songs) 2- Little often annie (damn near every scene had a different funny song) 3- Candy stripers (title song and "It hurts") 4- Teeny Buns (title song and "Copsucker")

I've always claimed that Insatiable #1 has the finest score of any porno that I've ever viewed. Except for one silly song played as background while Marilyn is blowing Richard Pacheco, it is really quite well done. And I think the title song could be released by some female artist (even Marilyn herself, as she sung it for the movie) and get some fair radio success.

Call me old school, but Rinse Dreams' Night Dreams, with Dorothy LeMay

  • Wall of Voodoo did much of the soundtrack, and the western campfire set appears in their Mexican Radio video.

The answer is, of course, Latex, hands down. The vid is pure MTV sex actually synchronized to the techo/industrial dance soundtrack (reminds me of Enigma, but much harder). The soundtrack took precedence over the sex, the sounds of which were mostly edited out. This didn't do much for the heat of the movie, but it was an amazing technological and, in fact, artistic achievement for the time. What little plot there is is incomprehensible, and the visual effects are now somewhat dated. But the music holds up.

Shock didn't quite achieve the same level of integration of music/sex, possibly because the soundtrack in the vid was much more varied-- classical spanish guitar just isn't gonna work as porn background music. But there was at least one scene that blew away anything from Latex--the Shayla/Sunset g/g scene (second in the movie, I think). Brilliant transition from piano chords in a minor key to modern techo. Good g/g scene, too, as the sex here wasn't as edited as in Latex. Plus, there as an actual full-blown non-sex musical number near the end that I found to be, well, quite dull. The visual effects in Shock have held up much better than Latex (this is the vid with the famous Gargoyle/Shayla DP scene), but musically, it still takes a backseat to Latex.

In my experience, Michael Ninn (director of both of the aforementioned vids) has the best command of music in porn. Andrew Blake is a distant second. Just about all the rest of the directors/producers are pathetic with their misuse of irritating, annoying porno background rock. Or worse--I read in RAME that Rodney Moore was using ragtime as background filler. Ugh. In my humble opinion, most if not all DVD porn should have a second soundtrack in which the music is omitted altogether. If they can't integrate music in a sensible way, I'd rather just hear the sex.

There are at least two porn musical comedies that I've read of. The first is My Bare Lady. The second was a much more recent take-off of Singing in the Rain--I forget the exact title of the the porn version. I haven't seem either, nor do I plan to. The thought of hearing porn starlets singing makes my teeth hurt.

Thanks to everyone that replied to my original message. Obviously there are some quality films that I need to check out.

I'd like to ask everyone about their opinions on some ideas my friend and I have with regards to porn and music. Some years ago, my friend and fellow musician procured a truly horrible amatuer porno. Now, its quality wasn't hampered by the plot (it was nonexistent), the acting or the girls. What catapulted it into a realm of cheesiness were the overdubbed moans and groans (they sounded like old people fucking) and the stupid, generic New Wave detritus that in no way should ever be associated with people having sex.

Annoyed, I turned the sound off and put some of my own music on. As we watched the tape to music, my friend and I decided to experiment. What would it sound like with classical? Hardcore techno? Experimental noise? Free jazz? Musique concrete? [Note: my friend and I are both music journalists.]

Our experiment yielded interesting results. For one, complex and aggressive drum 'n' bass goes great with porn. Alec Empire, old Squarepusher, Panacea...for some reason that stuff enhanced the action on screen. Secondly, free jazz - even Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" - and noise also proved to be excellent background music choices. The complex rhythms in free jazz and the general wackiness of noise somehow fit in with the fucking on screen.

This made us both think: do any pornos exist that actually use these types of music? We automatically assumed not, because a porn director who decided to use Miles Davis or Aphex Twin would, if caught, get his ass sued off. But then I read something about John Zorn making music for a Japanese gay bondage flick that was never released...and that truly made me wonder.

So my question is this: are there any pornos out there that have really strange music, like hardcore techno, free jazz, or experimental strangeness? If so, I want to know what they are! Also, what are everyone's feelings on using these types of music in a porn movie? Would it work for you, or would it be too esoteric or distracting?

Hi, first of all, I'm a music journalist, too and so I can understand you when you say that porn usually has really bad quality music and you seldom get top level musicians involved in porn soundtracks.

But there had been exceptions.
First of all:

  • Body Love. This a 1977 Lasse Braun's porn flick. The soundtrack for this was done by noone else than Klaus Schulze, the german electronics genius. I never saw the flick, but I do have the soundtrack and it's just amazing, like anything else KS wrote in the 70's. I've been speaking with Klaus about that and he told me that writing music for a porn flick is much easier and intriguing than doin' it for a mainstream movie, because you don't have a script to follow, just images of sex that gives you sensations that are easy to be translated in notes streams. He would have done other porn soundtracks, but he never did it again just for one reason, no porner was any more able to front his economic requests.

Nowadays the main exception to low quality music are the Private flicks, expecially Tanya Hyde's Pirate De Luxe tapes ('Extreme Desires', 'Tanya Hyde's Twisted Dreams' and 'Tanya Hyde's London Calling'). She gets some real high level trip hop stuff and she really manage to melt the tape editing with the music. But Private can effort high budgets that almost noone else is able to match.

More, I highly suspect that the guy realizing the music for german porn company Videorama (whose pseudonymous now escapes me) is a former german krautrock musician, for the very tipical style he uses, really expanded ambient electronics (maybe Can's former keyboardist, Irmin Schmidt?).

I rather liked Gleaming Blue Spires music from Devil In Miss Jones 3 and 4. Nothing like listening to "A Christian Girl's Problem" while Lois Ayres soaps up in the shower ;-).

Plus, they made such a kick-ass trailer for #3, since the music is actually in sync with the video, so when you hear the drum beat, it's a shot of a lady getting it deep.

Very 80s stuff, but very cool.

American Pie with Arcadia Lake and Lysa Thatcher had original sendups of great fifties tunes, especially a great doowop group singing "shove it up" to the tune of some classic Platters tune during a tag team double sister blow job instructional session.

Also, as to use of music to enhance a scene, a recent vid with Violet Love and another Latina (who looks just like her) double teaming Sean Michaels to a fabulous flamenco / jazz score that doubled up the beat when one of them sat on his dick was GREAT. I think the movie was "Crazy from the Heat".

Bronski Beat wrote music specifically for several gay porn films. :)
