Pet statistics

As far as I know. there's no readily available source of Pets' vital statistics, such as the list of Playmate statistics compiled by some avid Playboy readers.  One reason is because Penthouse doesn't get data sheets on all its models.  For example, Penthouse knows that Tania Russof (Sep 96) was over 18 when she shot her POM pictorial (and, presumably that she's married to Private director Pierre Woodman and stars in his films), but that's about it.

So the rest of this information relies on memory and helpful notes from people like you.  If you wish to add or correct something, please let me know.

POM with the most appearances in Penthouse

Ads that I have seen for Melissa Wolf's appearances as a feature dancer proclaim her as the most-photographed Penthouse Pet.  I don't know what criteria she used to arrive at that claim, but until I'm proven wrong, I'll say that Janine Lindemulder's 16 appearances qualify her as the Pet who has appeared the most in Penthouses.

Youngest POM

Traci Lords (Sep 84) was born on May 7, 1968, and was 16 when her POM pictorial was published.  Traci went on to a successful career in adult videos that lasted about a year and a half before it was found that she had been underage at the time of all but one of her magazine appearances and videos.  The exception is Traci, I Love You, which is the only Traci tape (aside from a tape consisting of scenes clipped from Traci, I Love You) that doesn't constitute kiddie porn.

Has a porn star ever been POY?

No, although at least four POYs have performed in adult videos (who did what in the Penthouse film Caligula is a question I'm still researching).  Several porn stars have been made the POY finals (Traci Lords, K.C. Williams, Dyanna Lauren, Sunset Thomas, to name four), but no POM who had done explicit adult movies or videos before the POY was announced has ever been a POY.

Anneka Di Lorenzo, Jisel (Brandy Sanders), Sasha Vinni and Gina LaMarca are the only to POYs who have done explicit adult videos or movies, and all did theirs after their POY selections.

The only two porn stars among POY runnersup, Janine Lindemulder and Leslie Glass, both began their adult video careers after they were featured as POY runnersup in the magazine.  Bonnie Dee, another POY runnerup, did some hardcore work in Caligula, but, like most of the other POMs in that feature, is probably more aptly characterized as a one-shot wonder rather than a porn star.

First POM to do hardcore videos or films (always subject to update as new information is received)

Julia Perrein (Jan 82) was an established adult-movie actress in Europe before her Penthouse appearance.  Several others, Anneka Di Lorenzo (Sep 73), Bonnie Dee (Nov 75) and Jane Hargrave (Jul 75) in the Penthouse production of  Caligula (1979); Mariwin Roberts (Apr 78) in Pet of the Month; and Pia Snow (aka Michelle Bauer, Jul 81), in Cafe Flesh, probably should be considered one-shot wonders.

The first American POM to have something that could truly be considered a career in adult videos and films would thus appear to be Traci Lords, whose Sep 84 appearance as POM pre-dated her porn work.

Other hardcore erotic work by Pets (uncertainties included):

Andi Sue Irwin (Sep 93): Hardcore stills of her performing fellatio, taken at the same time as her 1996 b/g Penthouse pictorial, exist.  These either are unpublished or are available through or at the Penthouse members-only site.

Sherry Moran (Apr 81): A cyber-correspondent reports having seen her in a hard-core photo book in the early 80s. No further information is available.

Lydia Schone (Jan 95): At least one hardcore still of her with her tongue apparently touching a guy's penis, taken at the same time as her b/g Penthouse pictorial, exists.  It is either unpublished or available through or at the Penthouse members-only site.

Is the material in the writeups accompanying the POM layouts true?

Get real.  Chloe Jones (Apr 98) is a professional model (she's been posing for Playboy NSSs for a couple of years), not a San Francisco-based flight attendant.  Nanna Gibson (Feb 98) is porn star Nanna/Dina Jewel/Dina Juwel, not a computer-literate student from Boston.  And Penthouse continues to run layouts of POMs who are established porn stars (Dyanna Lauren [Jul 95], Sunset Thomas [Mar 96], Tania Russof [Sep 96] and Rocki Roads [Sep 97] to name four) that don't acknowledge the ladies' careers.  Whether the folks at Penthouse don't know about the models' porn work, or whether they think that many members of the magazine-buying public are too stupid to notice or won't care, I don't know.

Whether or not the Penthouse writers of "girl-copy" recognize established porn stars when they are creating identities for their models, there are at least three reasons why "legends" are created for models:

  1. The people who write the text can make up more exotic, erotic and fascinating stories about the models than the models can pull from their real lives.

  2. To protect the models from stalkers and to reduce the chance that some people they know (family, friends, etc.) whom they might not want to find out about their work for Penthouse will do so.

  3. Penthouse often cannot get in touch with the model to interview her.  In many cases, the photographs submitted by the photographer are old, and the photographer may not have current contact information to pass along to Penthouse.  If Penthouse can't contact the model, a make-believe story is crafted for her.

The POY cycle

Unlike Playboy's PMOY, who is chosen from among the previous calendar year's PMOMs, the POY is chosen from the of Pets of the Month for the 12-month period ending in August 16 months before the POY issue.  For example, Paige Summers, the POM in Aug 96 ,was the last POM eligible for the POY award that was announced in the Jan 1998 issue.  The Jan 99 POY will be chosen from the POMs from Sep 96 (Tania Russof) to Aug 97 (Roxy).

Return to index

How is the POY chosen?

I don't know whether sleeping with Bob Guccione is or was ever a requirement or even a prospect-enhancing move.  I do know that a model enhances her prospects for being POY by continuing to be involved with Penthouse and its promotions.  Pets who are never heard from again after their photo shoot or who indicate that they don't care to do anything for the magazine after their appearances don't have much of a chance of making the finals, let alone becoming POY.

Popularity among readers has something to do with the selection process, but it's not the sole criterion.  The 1997 and 1996 Pets of the Year both received the most reader votes, which merely indicates that the readers' preferences coincided with the Penthouse powers-that-be on those two occasions.

Sex in Penthouse

Although Penthouse has been publishing pictures of naked bodies and depictions of sexual conduct for almost 30 years, I've long thought that there's been an element of "plausible deniability" to many of the images -- it sure looked like they were doing what we were supposed to think they were doing, but you just couldn't be sure (perhaps to provide an element of reasonable doubt in obscenity cases, though that's conjecture on my part).

The question of explicit depiction is actually two questions:

  1. Is she really doing what it looks like she's doing?  (Or are they really doing what it looks like they're doing?
  2. Does the picture actually show her (or them) doing it?

A cybercorrespondent  who's in a position to know says that the models have indeed been doing what we're supposed to think they're doing for many years. Nonetheless, the first honest-to-goodness, no-doubt-about-it, hardcore, penis-inserted-in-an-orifice shot, in my estimation, was in the Sep 95 "Cattle Annie and Little Britches" pictorial, which pretty clearly shows a model with her lips wrapped around a penis on page 153.  In Jul 1997, the "Saxon and Steele" pictorial showed a similar act a little more clearly.  That was followed by one photo of a penis in Holly's mouth in the Aug 97 issue, then by some photos of a silhouetted Jenna Jameson giving a blowjob in Sep 97, then by Janine Lindemulder's blowjob-and-most-probably-vaginal-penetration pictorial in Dec 97. Penthouse appears to have crossed another frontier with a Jan 97 pictorial showing Leslie Glass giving a blowjob, being penetrated and taking a facial cumshot.

Determining when other lines were first crossed is more difficult and subjective.  (How far in qualifies for insertion?  Does the tip of a tongue touching a clitoris count as cunnilingus?  Is it really contact, or is there still some doubt?) Another cybercorrespondent, who had nothing else to do one rainy, cold day when he was ill, prepared an extensive list of pictorials and gauged the relative probability of actual contact in each picture on a 1-10 scale. Using his analysis, which dates from 1985, I've compiled the following list of his first no-doubt-about-it depictions and supplemented it with a little research of my own. Corrections are welcome.
